Baphu ('horn'), membranopipe. A truncated cone of cardboard, originally a container for hosiery yarn from Patiala (Punjab). The tube is covered with purple paper foil at the wider end, with a strip of blue paper at the distal rim. Part of a yellow balloon is fitted over the narrower end, with a cane mouthpiece inserted into the blowing tube of the balloon and fixed there with a red rubber band. Sound is produced when the player blows into the mouthpiece, forcing air through a narrow vent between the cardboard wall of the instrument and the partially inflated balloon.
