raised sandal (sandal (clothing: footwear))

One of a pair of raised sandals, men's. Sole made of one piece of wood carved to follow roughly the outlines and contours of the foot, curving upwards slightly at front and back. Four grooves around the edge of each and a stamped decoration at front. Behind this a green wool cloth strap with hemp lining is bound into the sandal with string which is sealed with wax below the sandal and wrapped round the cloth above, where it would sit between the toes forming an upright. Behind this the cloth strap divides to either side of the foot and is inserted into the wooden sole at either side of rear where it is secured with a row of four nails to each side, and stitching. The underside of the sandal is carved to form a hollow at the centre, a heel at the back and two side supports.
