pouch (containers); betel leaf container

Rectangular pouch for containing betel ingredients, made of woven palm leaf. The pouch is made in two parts attached with a thin cord, and has a pattern of small brown squares. It was originally pigmented purple overall, but has largely faded. Accompanying printed display label headed 'CEYLON. COMMERCIAL COLLECTION' contains the following information: 'Name: Pouch for holding betel. Locality: Jaffna. Description; Made of Palmyra Leaf. No. 1894.' On the reverse, and marked on the object is: 'JJ 462'.
