branding iron

Branding iron with a wooden handle split near top to facilitate the insertion of iron head. Iron alloy head has u-shaped bottom bar or socket and penannualar or horseshoe shaped branding surface. Whole head is covered with black substance and is held in place in shaft with vegetable fibre binding. Wooden handle has cracked surface, this is possibly a feature of the type of wood or it could be damage. There is a wooden protrusion at the end of handle possibly an insertion. 2 large woodworm holes indicate previous infestation.
