Taxidermy case of two adult male and two adult female and nest of Red Crossbill. According to Edward Hart, writing on 6 April 1927, 'Bottom left (no 1): adult male; top left (no 2): adult male; top right (no 3): adult female (no 4): adult female and nest. Plumage variable, according to age, sex and season. All shot by me in Southbourne Wood, near Christchurch, March 1892 - 1894. A local resident breeding in certain pine woods in the neighbourhood of Christchurch. The crossbill is a very early breeder, commencing in February. In summer they flock, wandering from one district to another, wherever there are pine trees, going no further than scarcity of food compels. Sexes differ, summer and winter plumage differ.
