321.322-71 Necked box lutes or necked guitars sounded by bowing with a bow

A modern Norwegian viol. Hardanger fiddle. No label. Highly arched back and belly with yellow varnish, decorated with a penwork pattern of scrollwork and a border of lozenges. Scroll carved into a stylized lion's head, the back of the peg-box is carved with an acanthus leaf. Eight dark stained pegs with bone facings and decorated knobs for the four fingered gut strings and the four wire sympathetic strings. Strings attached to the tailpiece of wood, covered with horn and decorated iwth an inlaid pattern of checquered lozenges. Tailpiece attached to the button by brass wire. No evidence of wear, the belly is lifting away from the ribs at the upper bouts and along the bottom. The joint in the ribs at the treble upper bout is parting.
