Sitting stool which acts as a seat of authority, kingship, or chieftainship. The word 'stool' refers not only to the objecvt itself but also to the office it bestows; kings and chiefs were called 'enstooled' when they began their leadership The stool would be used during important gatherings. It is said that in early Ashanti history leaders would sit on leather cushions, until the Ashanti moved into a forest region and were able to create stools out of wood.
These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
