The majority, if not all, of these images are associated in one way or another with Emslie Horniman. Emslie Horniman may have photographed some of the images himself. Some photographs are dated and inscribed with notes which coincide with Horniman's trips to Burma and his descriptions of events and scenes he witnessed firsthand. He seems to have acquired some of the images from other photographers. Some images predate his 1925 and 1927 trips to Burma. Two photographs are positively attributed to Donald Gunn and bear the date 1903. The nature of the association, if any, between Horniman and Gunn is unknown at this time. There is also a note on the back of one photo attributing the image to a "Miss Kohn". It is likely that photos taken in Burma by different photographers ended up in an album which has since been dismantled. Some of the photos in this album may have been on display as part of an exhibition as is suggested by the exhibition mounts still attached to some of the photos. Some photos are almost certainly inscribed in E.J. Horniman's own handwriting.

These objects are only a part of our collections, of which there are more than 350,000 objects. This information comes from our collections database.
