India Photographs and Negatives: Beryl de Zoete Collection

Photographs of dance and dancers taken during Beryl de Zoete's travels in India in around 1935, which culminated in their publication 'The Other Mind: A Study of Dance and Life in South India with 128 illustrations' in 1953.

Beryl de Zoete first travelled to India in 1935, and then returned several times throughout the next 15 years before her health started to ultimately decline. During this time, she collected the studies that would form her second book, 'The Other Mind' (1953). Much like 'Dance and Drama in Bali' (1938), many of the photos published in the book, and therefore those in the Horniman collection, were not taken by De Zoete herself but rather she acquired them from the places she visited and the people she met there. Many of the photos from India were taken by Alice Boner (1889-1981), a Swiss artist and historian who also travelled much of Asia and published works on Hindu arts. The reverses of some of the prints reveal where the photos were developed, and occasionally, who took them.
