Fisherman's ceremonial coat, maiwai, literally 'a thousand congratulations', to be worn when celebrating a good catch, for example. Dark blue coat, with multi-coloured stencilled and dyed (tsutsugaki) design on the lower part and on the back. The design on the top of the back is in the form of a crane carrying a banner in its beak, the banner with a design indicating a family on it. Superimposed on the crane design is a red 'mon', or family crest, in the shape of a paulownia flower. The garment has very wide sleeves, and is lined with lighter blue material. There are two Japanese characters on the back of the coat. One reads 'big', the other, which is set against a red ground on the back of a turtle, means 'fishing catch'. Together they express a wish for a good catch. There is white tacking along the lower hem and also along the edge of the sleeves.
