This rattle was purchased in a market. It is used as an accessory for imina pulloyana (a masked dance representing the Fulani girl masquerader), danced by Dogon men. This satirical masked dance depicts the Fulani nomads as wealthy, beautiful and lazy. The rattle is used as an accessory, together with a fan. It is also used to keep money collected during masked performances.
