Archetypal solid plate helmet, lacquered black on the outside, and red on the underside of the visor. The helmet is lined with black hessian and there is an orange/red, inch-wide band of lacquer inside the front edge of the helmet. Attached at the back, with loops at two sides, inside the helmet is green braided thread cord, possibly silk, used for tying the helmet on the head. It would be tied under then go back inside and then over the front of the chin of the wearer. The dent in the front is from testing by firing a bullet at it. This indicates that it was purchased by a more affluent soldier. The neck guard and cord were probably replaced and replaced mid-19th century for the civil wars for the restoration of the emperor.
